Virtudes Cardinales (Cardinal Virtues) is a finding I made in 2019 of two figures carved in wood inside a miniature piece of furniture. My first impression after seing these was of manuals from the middle ages called the Ars Memorativa, texts made with the intent of learning the art of memory. These manuals contained methods on how to improve one's memory, and to then remember lenghthy texts and orations. The images in these sheets were inspired by classic texts such as Plato's Republic, where the four Cardinal Virtues are mentioned and from which I take the names for this piece. The four Cardinal Virtues are: Prudence (la prudencia), Justice (la justicia), Fortitude (la fortaleza) and Temperance (la templanza).
